Strelitzia Award 2020 Contest Rules

Submission of a contest entry form denotes acceptance of these Contest Rules.

  1. The contest fees are R350 for ROSA members and R700 for non-members.

  2. Entrance is not guaranteed, and entrants will need to submit a short synopsis with their entry forms in order to be considered for eligibility.

  3. Entry numbers will be capped at twelve (12) eligible entries.

  4. Entrants must be at least 18 years of age by the date of entry.

  5. The closing date for entries is Sunday 24th November 2020.

  6. At the time of entry, entrants should be unpublished – i.e. (a) not have a self-published work of fiction available for sale on any major retailer, (b) nor have previously self-published a work of fiction on any of the major retail sites, (c) nor have entered into a publishing contract with any traditional fiction publisher prior to the commencement of this contest.

  7. For the purposes of this contest, work posted on Wattpad will not be considered as published, however any work of fiction for which the author has received payment will be considered as a published work. Works of non-fiction, articles, paid blog posts, published dissertations, and short stories entered into any of ROSA’s anthologies are exempted.

  8. At the time of entry, entrants may not have been previously published under another name. This includes any paid fiction ghost-writing work done for another author.

  9. Entries may not be published as long as they are under consideration for this award. The entry may not be self-published while this book is under consideration for this award. In the event that an entrant receives an offer of publication while the entry is under consideration, or the author chooses to self-publish, the Contest Administrators should be notified.

  10. Entries may be submitted in either English or Afrikaans. At this time, entries may not be submitted in any other language.

  11. Entries must be written by the author, and cannot be ghost-written for or by another author, or be entered by a third party.

  12. The entry must be a work of Romantic Fiction, which means the work must contain a central love story, and the resolution of the romance must be emotionally satisfying and optimistic. If two or more judges feel that the entry does not satisfy these conditions, the entry will be disqualified.

  13. Entries must be original. Any work that is found to have been plagiarised will be automatically disqualified, and the entry fee will be forfeited.

  14. All applicants will be notified within one week of the entry deadline whether or not their application has been successful. Any entries received after the maximum number of entries has been received will be notified of non-acceptance.

  15. Preference will be given to new entries, which have not yet been submitted to the contest in previous years.

  16. Entrants may not submit the same manuscript into the contest more than twice in a five-year period.

  17. Manuscripts which have previously won the contest may not be re-entered. Past winners may enter only with a new work, and only if they meet all other contest criteria.

  18. Each entrant may enter no more than one book. A pseudonym does not count as a separate person (i.e. the limit is one entry per person, not per author name.)

  19. Submissions for the first round must be submitted to contest@romancewriters.co.za by end of day on Sunday 1st March 2020.

  20. First round submissions must contain both (a) the first three consecutive chapters of the manuscript (not to exceed 12,000 words), and (b) a two-page synopsis.

  21. Both the manuscript pages and the synopsis should be in Times New Roman size 12 font, and should be double spaced.

  22. Submissions should be sent in Word Document format. This will enable the Contest Administrator to ensure the anonymity of the entrants, and to ensure correct formatting.

  23. Entrants will be notified in the first week of May whether they have been selected for the second round.

  24. Second round entrants will be required to submit completed manuscripts (not exceeding 60,000 words in length) by Sunday 26th July 2020.

  25. Manuscripts not received by the deadline dates in the required formats will be disqualified.

  26. ROSA office bearers and committee members may enter the contest, as long as they are not involved with the administration of the Strelitzia contest. The Contest Administrator(s) may not enter this contest.

  27. The definition of ‘romance’ implies the romantic development of a relationship between the protagonists, and includes all romantic book sub-genres and heat levels (including but not limited to: contemporary, historical, futuristic/science fiction, fantasy, LGBTQIA, paranormal, time travel, romantic suspense, erotic romance, ménage, chick lit, young adult, new adult, romantic comedy, inspirational).

  28. The Contest Administrator reserves the right to disqualify any entry should it contain, in his/her opinion, any of the following presented in a positive light or as titillation: rape, paedophilia, incest, or any other conduct that is degrading or promotes hate.

  29. Any entrant who is found to have plagiarised from another author, or who has misrepresented their previous publication history, will be disqualified, their entry fees forfeited, and they will be prohibited from entering any future ROSA contests.

  30. Entrants give permission for ROSA to use the name / profile picture of the winner on its website, social media and any material relating to the promotion of this award.

  31. Judging is anonymous, and ROSA discourages any communication between judges and entrants. All queries should be directed to the Contest Administrator on contest@romancewriters.co.za.

  32. The winner will be announced at a ROSA gala event in late September or October, at a date and venue still to be announced.

ROSA reserves the right to disqualify entrants who do not comply with these rules.

The Contest Administrators' decision in this regard is final, and the entry fee will not be refunded in the event of disqualification.
